University Plastic Surgeons Play Vital Role in Conjoined Twins Separation
Posted on November 16, 2016
Dr. Uzoma Ben Gbulie, MD, FACS, and Dr. Robert Wallace, MD, were at the news briefing head table from a team of doctors numbering in the dozens who participated in a conjoined twins separation. The two doctors from University Plastic Surgeons represented what the medical team described as one of the three most critical and difficult elements of the 18 hours of surgery; the other two critical elements for separating the twins conjoined at the pelvis were urology and orthopedics. At the news conference, Doctors Wallace and Gbulie described the months of preparation work required for this highly unusual procedure and the challenges of the actual surgery. The 12-month-old ischiopagus (fused together at the lower half of the body) conjoined twin girls, Miracle and Testimony Ayeni came from Nigeria for the specialty surgery that took place at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.
